Two generations of Kottaram family have helped the needy and empowered lives of rural people, wherever they took up agriculture. Founder Trustee Dr. K.V. Krishna Das is a renowned physician and teacher. His Text Book of Medicine and Handbook of Clinical Methods, published by Jaypee Medical Publishers, New Delhi, was a standard textbook for MBBS students and young doctors practising all over India.

He was actively involved in social welfare and charitable activities and has contributed to community medicine, self-employment and education among the deprived sections of society during his 30 years service at the Government Medical College & Hospitals, Thiruvananthapuram. Since retirement in 1988, he has continued to be actively involved in community work, providing free medical consultation, financial assistance, besides donating medicines, books, journals, hand tools and other equipment to the needy.

In his pursuit of philanthrophy, he initially set up a common fund with donations from immediate family members. Initially, he began on a modest scale, with social work and community development activities in the rural parts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kuttanad and Wayanad where the family owned agricultural land and plantations, which provided a livelihood for local communities. As all family members were busy pursuing their careers as well as managing agriculture during 1990 - 2010, it was decided to continue charitable and social work within the constraints of available time and funds from personal contributions.

In 2013, Dr. Krishna Das became patron of the Dr. K.K. Haridas Foundation, established in memory of his son. This registered charitable society (Reg. No. ALP/TC/337/2013) conducts an annual mega medical camp in Alappuzha district and awards prizes for MBBS rank-winners of TD Medical College, Alappuzha, and for MD and DM toppers of the Amritha Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi. In June 2017, the Founder-Trustee and family members agreed that the obligation of every individual of the family lay in reaching out to more beneficiaries by way of supporting social and charitable activities and grassroots development work. Thus, the Kottaram Charities Trust (Reg. No. TVM/209/2017) was founded to further the mission that began three decades ago. Today we are united to empower deserving people by way of promoting education, self-employment, social betterment, medical aid, sports, arts & culture and grassroots development work. We also contribute towards charitable activities of fellow organisations.
